"Practice does't make perfect, only perfect practice makes perfect."
Bob Dwyer - Australian World Cup Winning Coach.

Jan (Obie) Oberholzer

Jan Oberholzer - modern rugby coach, educator, analyzer, critic and rugby thinker -  was born 1948, in the era of the
influential ‘baby boomers’, who made a significant impact on the world economy, politics and sport.
From 1978 to 1982, Jan played 87 matches for the Northern Transvaal Rugby Union, now the Blue Bulls rugby team,
with 11 matches as captain, including four Currie Cup winning medals.
He also played for the Junior Springboks (1980), South African Universities (1981) and South African Barbarians (1982).
Jan started coaching after he played his last representative match in 1982 in Santiago against Chili. After coaching
various club teams in Pretoria, and the Blue Bulls “B” team in the National “B” division, he embarked on a business
career.
This new venture only lasted a few years, before Jan’s love for the game lured him back to Pretoria in 2001 where he
opened ‘The Rugby Bureau’, the first private coaching entity in South Africa.
At the beginning of 2002 Jan was asked to coach the Griffons Rugby Team in the Currie Cup competition and in 2003
he became head coach of the newly established Harmony Sports Academy in the Free State Province.
Jan’s coaching career at the Academy gave him the opportunity and freedom to produce four best-selling CD-ROMS:
‘Basic Skills for Young Players’ (2004); ‘80 of the Best Coaching Drills’ (2005); ‘A Practical Guide to Modern Rugby
Coaching’ (2006) and ‘How to Prepare to Win’ (2009).
In December 2006, he returned to Pretoria, to start the ‘Joberrugby Academy’ (JRA) with the popular ‘joberrugby.com’
website as its mouthpiece.
In March 2009, he took his coaching clinic, ‘Coach the Coaches – SA Tour’, through South Africa, visiting 26 cities and
towns, teaching more than 2000 coaches ‘the power of the modern game’
.
